Here are some useful tips to help you avoid extra spending in New York:
Happy Hours
You can eat cheap in New York! Every day, somewhere from 17:00 to 20:00 (or from 16:00 to 19:00), many bars and cafes offer special menu prices (the so-called “happy hours”). This is a great way to have a delicious snack, and sometimes a full dinner, moreover, at a minimum price.
Here are a few points where the Happy Hours system operates:
- Vinatería — daily, from 16:00 to 19:00. Italian and Spanish cuisine.
- Sanfords — daily from 16 to 18. Here you can taste delicious oysters.
- The Highwater — from Monday to Friday, from 13:30 to 19:00. Cocktail bar with light cuisine.
- Bella Union — Tuesday from 16:00 to 20:00. Be sure to try the local burgers here.
- Dante West Village — daily from 15:00 to 17:00. This institution once received the award “Best bar in the world”.

Shopping in New York
Shopping in the Big Apple is not a cheap pleasure. In ordinary branded stores, prices are not particularly budget-friendly, and discounts with sales are not as constant as we would like. However, there is a way out! In Manhattan and Brooklyn, you can find large stock stores like JC Penney, Century 21, Marshalls and Target with a wide selection of clothing from world brands and really good discounts.
The purchase process is extremely simple: you go to the store’s website, find the right thing, check its availability, and if it is there, you come and pick it up. That’s it!
Urban and public transport
Of course, it is more convenient and faster to travel around the city by taxi, but this method of transportation will “eat” your budget very quickly. It would be better to purchase a Metrocard and use the metro and buses. And do not forget to walk — you will not only save money, but also, perhaps, you will come across places that you would miss if you moved exclusively by transport.
Or on a turnaround, without using the subway, they would have missed the chance to experience the real aesthetics of New York. Interesting architecture, vintage photographs, paintings of schoolchildren, a musical attraction — it’s all about the New York subway.
For reference: you can buy a travel pass at any metro station, tourist offices or shops and kiosks.
NY City Pass
A proven way to save money is to purchase a city pass. With it, you will have free (or almost free) access to the main attractions of the city plus a sightseeing bus tour.
You can find out more details and purchase a card here.
